EYELID SURGERY (Blepharoplasty)

Eyelid Surgery Continued

The surgery can be performed either under local anesthesia and sedation or under general anesthesia. Excess skin and fat is carefully removed from both the upper and lower eyelids and sometimes repositioning of the lower eyelid is necessary to prevent droopiness postoperatively. The surgery will take approximately 1-1/2 to 3 hours. Patients are asked not to strain their eyes the evening of surgery and to apply constant ice packs to the eyelids. Usually there will be a fair amount of swelling of the eyelids for one or two days, along with bruising and discoloration that may last up to 10 days.

Makeup can often be used after 5-6 days to allow the patient to return to work. The results are very gratifying and give patients a much fresher and more youthful look. Again, this is often one of the first signs that we see of facial aging occurring because this is where we visit with each other.
